In an extremely tragic incident in upstate New York, Patrick D. Proefriedt, 26, allegedly fired a crossbow at his wife while she was holding their 3-week-old daughter during a heated argument. The bolt struck the newborn and then hit the mother. Proefriedt attempted to remove the bolt and prevent his wife from calling 911 before fleeing the scene. The baby, Eleanor M. Carey, tragically died, while the mother was transported to the hospital for treatment. Proefriedt was later apprehended by law enforcement officers hiding in the woods and has been charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and first-degree criminal contempt. The investigation is ongoing.
