The final dinners of the notorious inmates including serial killer Ted Bundy and Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh have been re-created by photographer Henry Hargreaves.Bundy, who died in the electric chair for offences including rape, necrophilia, and more than 35 counts of murder, declined to choose his last meal.He was given the traditional last meal of steak, eggs, hash browns, toast, milk and juice.

McVeigh, who killed 168 when he detonated a bomb outside the Oklahoma Federal Building in 1995, ate two pints of mint and chocolate chip ice cream.Victor Feguer, who was executed by lethal injection for kidnap and murder, ate a single olive with a pit in it presented on a plate with fork.Ronnie Lee Gardner, who was executed by firing squad for murder, robbery and burglary, ate lobster and steak while watching the Lord of the Rings movies.New York artist Mr Hargreaves took the pictures from the prisoner's viewpoint and re-created it with cutlery and table cloths from the era they died in.Mr Hargreaves said: "I tried to recreate the meals as if the prisoner had just sat down to eat and they are looking into their plate."Different prisons, different states and different eras all meant I had to create very different settings for each one."It's a new look at the traditional ritual to grant a condemned person a final meal of their request and to receive religious right."

He focussed on inmates on death row in America, where an estimated 3,000 people are waiting to be executed. He picked the oddest requests recorded and re-created the meal forking out hundreds from his own pocket. The inmates were refused alcohol and could only receive a meal costing up to $40 (£24).The photographs have received rave reviews after they were posted online.

Mr Hargreaves added: "I was showing the series to an older gentleman and I could see tears welling in his eyes."Although he didn't say anything I knew right then that he had a personal connection at some point with this ritual."I only picked the most bizarre last meals such as the guy who ordered just a single olive, which easily had to be the strangest."There has been some speculation on the significance of this as an olive is believed to be a symbol of rebirth, so to be buried with an olive pit in your stomach is an interesting notion."
