The Hug-a-Hero Doll program, organized by the American Red Cross and Daddy Doll, Inc., aims to support military children during their parent's deployment. Patricia Perez, an American Red Cross program manager, highlighted the difficulties that deployment poses for the entire family, especially the children. To address this, the program creates dolls resembling the deploying service members, featuring a photo of the service member on the front and an optional message to the child at the bottom.

Jason Brand, director of Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces for Southern California, emphasized the importance of programs like Hug-A-Hero Doll in helping military children build strength during challenging times.

These dolls provide comfort to the children by allowing them to hold and hug their parents while they are away.

The Month of the Military Child, celebrated every April, recognizes the sacrifices and resilience of military children who face frequent moves, parental deployments, and other challenges. The U.S. Department of Defense estimates that there are over 1.6 million military children worldwide who often experience elevated stressors, depression, and anxiety.

The Red Cross offers various programs and services to support military families and specifically focuses on the needs of military children.

In addition to the Hug-a-Hero Doll program, the Red Cross provides access to legal services, education assistance, recreational opportunities, and reconnection workshops designed to help children and families cope with separation and deployment. These workshops offer a safe space for sharing experiences, connecting with other military children, and learning coping strategies.

Hug-a-Hero Doll distribution events evoke strong emotions, filled with gratitude and joy amidst the challenges of deployment. Military units deploying for six months or more can request the dolls through coordination with the Red Cross.

Overall, the Hug-a-Hero Doll program is just one of the many free resources available to military families through the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces. It aims to enhance children's resilience and help them cope with the stress of separation, providing support during their parents' deployments.
