Robert Chambers, known as the Preppy Killer and the Central Park Strangler, was released from prison after serving a second sentence for drug and assault charges. Chambers was convicted of murdering 18-year-old Jennifer Levin, whose body was found half-clothed in Central Park.
He claimed it was an accident that occurred during rough sex. Chambers originally faced second-degree murder charges but accepted a plea deal of first-degree manslaughter after the jury failed to reach a decision. He served 15 years and was released in 2003. However, he was arrested again in 2007 for drug charges and sentenced to 19 years in prison.
Chambers' lawyer claimed he became a heroin addict at 14 and used 10 to 12 bags a day by 2007. Chambers will remain on parole until 2028. The case was revisited in a 2019 docuseries called The Preppy Killer. Chambers said he strangled Levin to stop her from hurting him during rough sex.
