Mark Goddard, famous for his roles in Lost in Space and General Hospital, has passed away at the age of 87. His wife, Evelyn Pezzulich, announced his death on Facebook, revealing that he had been battling pulmonary fibrosis and died while under hospice care in Hingham, Massachusetts. Pezzulich expressed her grief and shared the details of Goddard's illness and passing. She explained that he had been hospitalized with pneumonia shortly after celebrating his 87th birthday in July.
Initially, there was hope when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center. However, it was later discovered that he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis, a disease with no cure. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Pezzulich praised the care he received at the Pat Roche Hospice Home, where he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Billy Mumy, Goddard's co-star in Lost in Space, also paid tribute to the late actor. Mumy reflected on their close friendship of 59 years and recalled their final conversation. He expressed his love for Goddard and acknowledged his talent as an actor. Mumy acknowledged that although Goddard sometimes felt confined by the campy nature of their show, he embraced and loved it. Goddard attained fame through his role as Major Don West in Lost in Space, a popular intergalactic series that aired from 1965 to 1968.
The show followed the adventures of the Robinson family and their encounters in space, with Goddard's character piloting the Jupiter 2. In his memoir, To Space and Back, published in 2008, Goddard humorously described his reaction to seeing himself in the silver lamé spacesuit for the first time. The series was later adapted into a feature film in 1998, with Matt LeBlanc playing the role of Major Don West.
In Netflix's 2018 reboot, Ignacio Serricchio took on the character. Apart from Lost in Space, Goddard also made appearances in General Hospital as Derek Barrington and had roles in various other shows such as One Life to Live, The Doctors, The Detectives, Johnny Ringo, and Blue Detective.
Goddard is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and his daughter, Melissa Goddard, who works as a producer. His legacy as a beloved actor and his contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered and cherished by fans worldwide.
