A 21-year-old woman named Jasmeen Kaur tragically lost her life after being abducted, bound with cable ties, and buried alive by her jealous ex-boyfriend. The horrifying incident occurred in March 2021, when Kaur was kidnapped from the aged care home where she worked in Adelaide, South Australia. Tarikjot Singh, also 21 years old, pleaded guilty to the murder.

During sentencing submissions in the Supreme Court, prosecutor Carman Matteo SC described the killing as an act of vengeance and an uncommon level of cruelty. Kaur was buried alive and conscious, inhaling and swallowing soil while actively breathing.

It was a terrifying and hopeless situation for her. Before her death, Kaur had filed a complaint with the police about Singh's stalking behavior. He had been cautioned by the police a month earlier.

The day before the murder, Singh downloaded a map of security camera locations in Adelaide. He also swapped his car with his flatmate's and used that vehicle to abduct Kaur from her workplace on March 5. Prior to the abduction, Singh had purchased cable ties and a shovel from Bunnings. Security footage showed Singh heading north with Kaur out of sight, indicating that she was either restrained in the back seat or the trunk.

Later that night, Kaur was brutally murdered and buried in the Flinders Ranges.

Kaur's body was discovered with her hands tied, her feet taped and cable-tied together, and blindfolded. Singh discarded her work ID, clothing, and cable ties at a rest stop on his way back to Adelaide. He also changed his SIM card to a different phone after the abduction. In his defense, Singh's lawyer, Martin Anders, claimed that his client had struggled to cope with the breakup of the relationship. Anders argued that Singh's mental health had deteriorated, leading to diminished capacity.

He stated that Singh still hears Kaur's voice and has hallucinations where he believes he is talking to her. Ultimately, Justice Kimber imposed a mandatory life sentence for Singh's crime, with the decision regarding the non-parole period to be determined the following month. The cruel and senseless killing of Jasmeen Kaur serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of jealousy and obsession.
