Melba Mebane, a 90-year-old woman, recently retired from her retail job after an astounding 74 years of never missing a single day of work. She spent her entire career at Dillard's, a well-known retail giant in Tyler, Texas. Melba began working for Dillard's at the young age of 17 in 1956. She started as an elevator girl and later moved to the cosmetics department. Throughout her impressive career, Melba gained the love and admiration of her colleagues and clients.
She was known for always showing up to work with a smile on her face and never calling in sick. Her sales skills were exceptional, and everyone who encountered her, whether customer or coworker, adored her. The store manager of Dillard's in Tyler, James Saenz, pointed out that Melba set the tone for excellent customer service and provided guidance and training to countless people.
Melba's work ethic and kind personality helped her form strong friendships with her coworkers. She cherished the relationships she built during her time at Dillard's. Her son, Terry Mebane, often accompanied her to work and was inspired by her dedication. Terry recalled how Melba would arrive at the store early to secure her preferred parking spot and was always the first person ready to start her day.
As Melba entered her 70s and 80s, she continued to work 40 hours a week, with Terry driving her to and from the store. However, after experiencing some health issues, Melba decided it was time to bid farewell to her Dillard's family at the age of 90. Reflecting on her career, Melba advised others to view work as more than just a paycheck and to always give their best effort.
Dillard's organized a retirement party for Melba, during which she was honored with the beyond excellence award. A plaque featuring her photo now hangs on the wall of the Tyler store, serving as a reminder of her decades of exceptional service. James emphasized that Melba's values and work ethic continue to be held in high regard, even in the modern world.
