2023/07/24

The police believe that a man accidentally killed his wife while cleaning his gun and then turned the weapon on himself and died by suicide. The incident occurred in Bolingbrook, Illinois when Simeon Hendrickson, a firearm training instructor, was working on one of his handguns. The gun accidentally discharged and the round struck his wife, Laurie Hendrickson.

Simeon then took his own life with the handgun. Initially, the police responded to a report of a man accidentally shooting himself, but upon receiving additional information, they realized that two shots had been fired and another person may have been shot. Simeon was pronounced dead at the scene, while Laurie was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead as well.

The couple's son expressed his grief in a Facebook post, describing his parents as loved and respected by many and the greatest parents anyone could have asked for. It was also revealed that Simeon taught concealed carry classes at a facility in suburban Chicago, as evident from his public posts on Facebook. Accidental gun deaths in the United States have been a persistent issue, with 549 cases reported in 2021, according to the Pew Research Center.

To prevent such incidents, it is important to practice safe firearm storage and take effective measures to protect children from unsecured firearms. Resources such as BeSMARTforkids.org provide information on these topics. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible firearm handling and safety measures.
